A Businessowners Policy bundles general liability and commercial property coverage into one policy, usually with business interruption income coverage included. It's built for small and mid-size businesses that lease or own their space, like a shop, an office, or a small warehouse. It does not include workers' comp, commercial auto, or professional liability.
Workers' comp is a separate policy. So is commercial auto, professional liability (errors and omissions), and flood. Equipment breakdown is often excluded unless you add it. If your business does anything beyond basic retail or office work, ask before assuming it's covered.
Small retail, offices, salons, and restaurants (restaurants often need liquor liability added separately) usually fit a standard BOP. Businesses with heavier operations, like manufacturing or equipment-heavy work, often need a different form entirely.
Does a BOP cover my equipment if it's stolen? Yes, business personal property coverage typically includes theft, subject to your policy limits and deductible.
Do I need a BOP if I work from home? Usually not the same policy. Home-based businesses need different coverage, since a BOP is built for a leased or owned commercial space.
Send me your current policy or a description of your business and I'll tell you straight whether a BOP fits or you need something else.
