What Happens to Your Rate When Your Auto Policy Auto-Renews?

Auto-renewal keeps your policy active without a lapse, but it doesn't freeze your rate. Carriers can adjust premiums at renewal based on filed rate changes, your driving record, claims, credit-based insurance score where allowed, and even changes to your vehicle's value, with or without a claim on your part.

What can move your rate at renewal, even with a clean record

  • State-approved rate filings, which apply broadly across the carrier's book, not just to you
  • Changes in your vehicle's age and value
  • Where you live, if the carrier has adjusted territory pricing
  • Credit-based insurance score changes, in states where that's used

What auto-renewal doesn't do

It doesn't automatically re-shop your coverage or confirm you're still getting the best rate available to you. It just keeps the same policy continuing under its current terms and whatever rate applies at that renewal.

Why a rate increase without a claim isn't unusual

Insurers price based on the whole book of business and broader claims trends, not just your individual history. A rate increase with a clean record usually reflects factors outside anything you did.

Common questions

Should I call before it auto-renews to check the new rate? Worth it, especially if it's been a couple years since you last shopped. I can pull it and compare before it processes.

Can I switch carriers right before an auto-renewal date? Yes, as long as the new policy is active before the old one renews, so there's no lapse.

Send me your renewal date and I'll check your rate before it renews on autopilot.
