Commercial Insurance in DFW: What Local Business Owners Get Wrong
Last reviewed: September 22, 2026
The most common mistake DFW-area business owners make on commercial insurance is assuming their policy covers something it doesn't, until a claim proves otherwise. A BOP that doesn't include professional liability, a personal auto policy stretched to cover work use, or a certificate of insurance without the additional insured endorsement a contract actually requires, these gaps sit quiet until they matter.
Where the gaps usually are
- Assuming a BOP covers everything, when it excludes workers' comp, commercial auto, and professional liability
- Using a personal vehicle for business without commercial auto or a hired/non-owned endorsement
- Certificates of insurance that name a certificate holder but skip the additional insured status a contract requires
- Payroll or revenue growth that isn't reported mid-term, creating a surprise at audit
Why this happens more with fast-growing businesses
Coverage gets set up once, early, and doesn't get revisited as the business adds staff, vehicles, or new types of work. What fit at $500k in revenue often doesn't fit at $2M.
What actually catches it
A yearly coverage review against what the business is actually doing now, not what it was doing when the policy was written. Twenty minutes once a year is usually enough to catch the gap before a claim does.
Common questions
How often should I actually review my commercial coverage? At minimum annually, and any time you add a vehicle, a location, or a significant new service line.
Is a coverage review going to cost me anything? No, and it's the fastest way to find out what you're actually paying for versus what you think you're covered for.
Send me your current policies and I'll tell you straight what's solid and what's not.
